MCV and MCH in Blood Test Reports: What Are They?

Due to their close relationship many people wonder what MCV and MCH in blood test results mean. 

  • Mean Corpuscular Volume or 
  • MCV is a measurement of red blood cell size. 

MCH quantifies the amount of hemoglobin in each cell. When combined they give anemia the following classification.

  • Small cells are called microcytic. 
  • Normocytic (normal cells). 
  • Macrocytic or big cells. 
  • Clinicians can rapidly and precisely rule out potential causes when testing blood by understanding what MCV and MCH are.
